These are enclosures rated by the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA) to provide personnel with degrees of protection against hazardous parts, as well as to provide degrees of protection for equipment inside the enclosure against solid foreign objects, water ingress and ice formation. NEMA 1 is constructed for indoor use, while the more robust NEMA 3R is constructed for either indoor or outdoor use.
